For Algebra 1 and Geometry, a scientific calculator will work great. Most any scientific calculator will work, but the TI-30 is the most common. If you like, you can CLICK HERE for a link I found on Amazon. The main thing you are looking for is a calculator with the Sin, Cos, and Tan buttons on it, because this allows students to do trigonometry.
For Algebra II and higher, students will need a Graphing Calculator. There are many types of graphing calculators that will work very well. The school generally uses the TI-83. If you like, you can CLICK HERE for a link to some examples of graphing calculators I found on Amazon. Graphing calculators, as you can see, are more expensive, because they can do far more. I personally am comfortable buying things used, and I often see them online for about $30 used. If you feel comfortable going that route and taking the risk (as I do), then that's a way to go about it. If you want a new one, they are closer to $100. If you find a way to get them new for less than that, please shoot me an email so I can post it for everyone's benefit!
For the SAT, there are certain calculators that are allowed and not allowed. CLICK HERE to see if your child's calculator is approved for the SAT (note: most all calculators are perfectly fine, but it's always good to check).
