Hi Parents, I want you to have a clear picture of how homework works in my classroom so you can better support your child at home. So, here's how homework typically works in my classroom:
What typically gets counted as homework:
1. Homework Packet: At the start of each unit (or chapter, whatever word you want to use), students are given a homework packet. This packet has most of the homework that they will be expected to do for the unit. If a unit has 6 lessons, then that packet would have six homework assignments in it. Click Here for an example of an Algebra 2 homework packet.
2. A Unit Review: Near the end of the Unit, I hand out a review. This also counts as a homework grade. Click Here for an example of a review.
Note: Depending on the Unit, I may assign something additional as homework, but the homework packet and review are most typical. If I assign something additional, I will make note of it in my weekly update. These updates done with blog posts on the homepage of this website. Click Here to go there now.
When is homework collected? Homework is due and collected on the day that students take their unit test. They come in, hand in their homework packets and reviews, and then they receive their unit test.
How is homework graded? I ask myself two questions for each assignment.
1. Did the student do every problem in the assignment?
2. If work was necessary, did they show the work?
If the answer to both of those questions is yes, the student gets full credit for the homework (usually 10 points). If not, they get a zero until they have done those two things.
3. If not all homework is completed, then partial or no credit will be given, depending on how much was completed.
May homework be turned in late? All homework must be turned in before taking the Unit Test to receive credit.
How much does homework count towards my child's grade? Homework counts for 5% of the overall grade, with tests counting for 70% and quizzes counting for 25%. Again, two big reasons to complete all homework is so that a) it prepares you for quizzes and test, and b) so that students are able to retake tests when necessary.
